75% of my initial conversations with my couples begin with “we have no idea what we want”. And something I always tell them is that’s okay!! Eloping is such an incredible choice for so many reasons, and you truly have the freedom to do whatever you want. But, that can also come with a lot of questions! What do I want? Where do I want to go? What would I want to do?
Everyone takes their own path for discovering what their wedding day will look like. Sometimes it starts with just finding a spot you love and letting the chips fall from there, like I go over on my how to elope page! However, if you are someone who finds inspiration from seeing some different ideas laid out like me, then you might still be looking for some additional guidance and ideas before choosing a location. Or maybe you’ve already chosen an ideal location, and you’re starting to think about what you might want your day to look like, and what experiences you want to have!
I wrote up three adventure elopement ideas and timelines in detail below for you to get an idea of just a few of the things that are possible for your elopement. They might not fit your vision exactly, but maybe they will provide inspiration for the direction you might like to take your celebration! With eloping you can do ANYTHING that calls to you, you just have to find what that is! 🙂 Let’s dive in!

The idea here is focused on the couple going on a hike somewhere beautiful, having a picnic out on their hike, and ending their day on the water at sunset. They wanted to focus on an adventure during the day and have a really epic ceremony somewhere unique – like on a private catamaran charter! I love this because it shows a way where they could have the best of both worlds – unique ceremony, great lighting, a hike they love, and a one-of-a-kind experience.
12:00p – Coffee on the deck together.
12:15p – Helping each other get ready.
12:45p – Exchange wedding gifts.
1:00p – Drive to Bluffs trailhead.
2:00p – Arrive and begin hike, stops along the way.
2:30p – Photos around the Bluffs.
3:30p – Cute picnic photos & lunch break.
4:15p – Hike back to trailhead.
5:00p – Head to boat dock.
6:00p – Boat Cruise Starts.
6:15p – Ceremony, pop champagne, photos on boat.
7:00p – Catered dinner on board.
8:00p – Pop champagne, go for a sunset swim.
8:30p – Sunset.
9:00p – Boat Ride Ends.

A sunrise elopement is one of my absolute favorite experiences. Many locations are significantly less crowded around sunrise as compared to other times of the day, and the lighting is just unbelievably beautiful! But what if you want that sunrise experience, but also the sunset one? The one where you curl up around a bonfire and watch the stars? This is a perfect adventure elopement idea and timeline example of that!
Sometimes the best way to get both experiences is to split the coverage. That means sharing an adventure in the morning, taking a mid-day break, and then going back out for another adventure in the evening. This isn’t always possible depending on the location, but if it is then it’s a way to get the best of both worlds!
5:00a – Meet at trailhead, begin hike up the mountain.
6:00a – Arrive at summit, touch ups.
6:15a – Sunrise.
6:15a – Private Vows as the sun crests, ring exchange, hand fasting.
6:45a – Photos around the mountain, taking in the views.
8:00a – Read letters from loved ones / Facetime them.
8:30a – Begin hike down.
9:30a – Arrive back at trailhead, morning coverage ends.
6:00p – Meet at cabin, photos with dog.
6:30p – Motorcycle ride through the woods.
7:00p – Private dining experience with a local chef at the cabin.
8:00p – Sunset photos at the cabin in the canoe, end with jumping in the lake.
8:30p – Sunset.
9:00p – Bonfire + s’mores.
9:30p – Drive to stargazing location (20 minutes).
10:00p – Stargazing photos.
11:00p – Coverage ends.

For this couple, we are going to focus on creating an experience where they can have an elopement experience and include loved ones without necessarily having a mini-wedding and giving up adventure. One of my favorite ways to accomplish this is to split to elopement into two days. That might sound crazy, but hear me out! This gives this couple an opportunity to still have the adventure they want, which in this case is a long hike at Pictured Rocks, and also celebrate their elopement with their family.
2:30p – Meet at Trailhead, begin hike, stop at spots #1 and #2 along the way.
5:30p – Read private vows at Grand Portal Point, overlooking Lake Superior, and exchange rings.
6:30p – Begin hike back.
8:00p – Stop at spot #3 for sunset photos and champagne.
8:30p – Sunset.
9:00p – Arrive back at trailhead, coverage wraps up.
12:00p – Photo coverage begins, detail photos of invitations/outfits/home/etc.
1:00p – Getting ready in separate rooms with families.
2:00p – First look in the woods on the property.
2:30p – Head to the Falls (30 min drive).
3:00p – Arrive at the falls, touch ups and prep.
3:30p – Waterfall Ceremony.
4:00p – Group Photos.
4:30p – Exploring + Portraits ariund the falls, family heads back to cabin to set up for dinner
6:15p – Drive back to cabin (30 min)
7:00p – Toasts + Champagne on the deck, followed by catered meal
8:00p – Sunset photos in the woods
8:30p – Sunset
9:00p – Coverage ends

Another really important aspect of eloping is who you hire as a photographer. Taking beautiful photos of your moments is a huge part of your day, but the right person can do even more! Finding a photographer who also helps you with planning is such a key factor when it comes to planning your dream adventure elopement. It’s one of my favorite aspects of what I do to help my couples, and I love nothing more than when they come to me with a couple of ideas and we work together to find the best way to make it a reality!
When it comes to eloping, the best thing to remember is you can truly do WHATEVER you want! Whether it’s hiking a mountain, boat rides on Lake Michigan, paddleboarding in the ocean, or exploring a castle – your possibilities are endless. I hope these adventure elopement ideas and timelines provide some inspiration for you to see just some of what is possible!
