HOW TO ELOPE

Your Elopement Guide

Whether you’ve always dreamed of a romantic elopement for your wedding day, are just checking out some options, I’m so excited to help you learn how to elope. Eloping is so much more than just running off to the courthouse, it’s about creating a small, intentional wedding experience – whatever that may look like to you! Eloping keeps you at the center of your wedding day, and gives you the ability to celebrate your love exactly how you want to.

You may be getting started on your planning, or maybe you’ve seen some people talking about small weddings on Tiktok and want to know more, either way I’m here to help! I’ve been photographing weddings for 9+ years and have focused on small weddings for the past 6, and I know firsthand that regardless of the wedding that planning can still be a little overwhelming! I’ve created this page to help guide you to learning how to plan your meaningful, authentic elopement experience. Let’s dive in!

Commonly Asked Questions about Elopements

Do we need to get legally married at our elopement?

Definitely not! If you don’t want to stress with the legalities on your wedding day, I’ve worked with plenty of couples who have signed the paperwork before or after – or not at all! Who says you need the government to commit to your life partner. You can have your day be whatever you want it to be!

How do we choose where to elope?

I’ll dig deeper into that below! A good starting point is to think about somewhere meaningful to you, or maybe somewhere you and your partner have always wanted to go. Or if you close your eyes and think about saying your vows, what kind of scenery do you see?

Do we need to have a wedding officiant?

It depends on where you are! Some states require an official judge, some states are self solemnizing, some states anybody can get ordained and be an officiant (like me here in Michigan)! It makes it a little confusing but every area is different, and your photographer can help educate you on the rules of whatever area you’re eloping in!

Can I Invite People to my Elopement?

Absolutely! Who you invite to your elopement is a personal decision, but it doesn’t have to be just the 2 of you if you don’t want it to be! Eloping is a very personal decision, and whether you envision a day with just you two, or just your closest people, just do whatever feels right to you. It’s easy to feel the pressure from loved ones to do something that they want, but there are other ways to incorporate them into your day – such as having them write letters for you to read, throwing a post-elopement celebration, or even joining you on your travels to celebrate with you after you elope! Whatever you choose, make sure it’s something that feels true to you and your partner.

How long does an elopement take?

Your elopement can be whatever you want it, but I always remind people that your elopement is still your wedding day! And it still deserves to be documented just like any traditional wedding day. I always recommend having a full day elopement, so you can truly take in each moment! But I generally recommend planning for no less than 4 hours!

Where Do You See Yourself?

How to Find Your Perfect Elopement Location

Figuring out what setting you see yourself in is the first step to coming up with your perfect location! There’s definitely a lot to consider when thinking about where to go, so don’t be stressed if it doesn’t come to you right away. Some aspects to consider would be kinds of scenery, seasonality, travel, activities, and accessibility! If you close your eyes and picture yourself saying your vows, what do you see? Are you standing in the woods, or maybe on top of a mountain? Are you on the sandy shoreline of Lake Michigan, or in the moody forests of the PNW? If we’re working together I’ll dive deep into these aspects with you and help you to figure out the best spot for you. I absolutely love traveling and no matter where you want to go, we will find the perfect spot!

This is maybe one of the toughest parts of planning an elopement, but it’s one of my favorites! When it comes to planning your elopement, the world is truly your oyster. Your elopement can take you anywhere - your favorite hike, the Smoky Mountains, or maybe even the Scottlish Highlands! You can go wherever you think would make you and your partner the happiest, and would mean the most to you.

Is there anywhere that is particularly meaningful or special to the two of you that would make it even more special if you eloped there?

Is there anywhere that you know you both have always wanted to go, that you think would be an epic destination for an elopement?

How to Elope

Vendors & Lodging

Things to Consider when eloping

The amount of vendors you bring along for your day depends entirely on your vision! Some frequent vendors I see at elopements are florists, hair/makeup artists, and officiants. But you can find all kinds of vendors to help you bring your vision to life! Private chefs, luxury picnics, musicians, videographers – so many options. I recommend choosing vendors that are going to help bring your vision to life and who are experienced with elopements! For lodging, is there a cabin you’d want to stay and get ready at? A campsite? A local Air Bnb that matches your vision? Find a spot that you love, but that also makes getting to your dream location easy!

Logistics & Details

Are there any intentional or cultural or meaningful things you want to incorporate into your elopement ceremony? For other activities, think of some things you two LOVE to do that would be cool to incorporate into your elopement day! I have a blog post you can check out here with elopement day activity ideas for more inspiration! If you’re planning some sort of an adventurous outdoor elopement, your attire also has to be a little more strategic than most traditional weddings! You want to make sure you’re wearing something comfortable that you can move around in, as well as potentially hike in! It’s also super important to keep the climate in mind when picking your attire. I don’t recommend heavy long sleeve dresses for summer, and if it’s cold outside then consider packing a cute jacket or shawl!

Weather, Permits, & Choosing a Date

Choosing a date is obviously a very important part of planning haha. The date you choose will determine what kind of activities you can do, what kind of weather you might encounter! If it’s the busy season, will your spot be filled with tourists? If it’s the off season, are there any accessibility items to take into account such as seasonal roads, or a long hike in the snow? Look into weather patterns for your time of year from past years! Is it usually stormy? Windy? Biting fly season? Most public lands (and some private) also require some kind of permit to hold a ceremony or take photos there! So make sure to look into your location to see what may be required.

After you’ve got a location in mind, you can really dive deep into planning! This is where you’ll really start honing in on some of those ideas and inspiration. Your vision for your day will dictate just how many details and various logistics you’ll need to coordinate. Most of my couples reach out to me in either this step or the one before to help them along in this process! Just know there’s not one single way you need to plan your wedding, and you can plan however you want. After photographing years of elopements, I have a good idea of how to make planning as stress-free as possible, and you can take this list and curate it to your specific planning needs!

Activities, Details, & What to Wear

You won’t be having the traditional large amount of guests to bank on capturing these moments, so most of the time the only things you have to remember this day by are going to be the photographs your photographer delivers to you. So, pick a photographer whose work you LOVE, who is going to help guide you to having an incredible experience! I frequently work with couples who haven’t set a date or location yet, and most typically book with me either before or right after figuring out a location! The sooner you reach out the better – it breaks my heart to turn couples away if I’m already booked!

Get those creative juices flowing with a good brainstorm session! Try to visualize where you see yourselves getting married. Is there a certain kind of scenery? A specific destination? A state or country? Try to narrow down as much as possible – but have fun and get lost in your imagination! Don’t worry about being too realistic, just try to let your ideas flow and see where it leads you.
